Wigs for People with Alopecia

Feb 26, 2023

What are the options if you are living with alopecia?

What do Jada Pinkett Smith, Viola Davis, Matt Lucas, Naomi Campbell, Kristin Davis, Tyra Banks and Selma Blair have in common – apart from being celebrities?

Each one of them has experienced hair loss, and knows what it is like to live with alopecia.

Alopecia is the term used for hair loss which occurs on the scalp, face or body. There are a few different types of alopecia, with alopecia areata probably the most well-known.

Causes of Alopecia

Certain health conditions are associated with alopecia, for example:

  • thyroid disease;
  • hormonal imbalances;
  • auto-immune disease;
  • scalp infection;
  • nutrient deficiencies
  • even following Covid.

Hair loss may also be a side effect of cancer treatment, or it may occur due to pregnancy, stress, or trichotillomania (hair-pulling disorder).

And sometimes, there is no obvious reason to explain why the hair is falling out.

While there is no cure, there are medical treatments available that help with regrowing hair. These may take the form of topical solutions, oral tablets, or local injections.

However these are not suitable for everyone.

Wigs for People with Alopecia

Which brings us to wigs!

Wigs can be a game-changer for people with alopecia, regardless of the degree of hair loss. They are made of either synthetic or human hair, with the real hair variety being considerably more expensive.

A full wig can be surprisingly low maintenance, and these days we are spoiled for choice! There are short, medium, and long styles to choose from; as well as straight, curly and wavy hair. You could try to stay true to your natural colouring or perhaps you might want to try a bold new look.

One popular option is a partial wig, known as a hair topper. These add much-needed volume to thin hair and are attached using clips.
